Every year, International Day of Zero Waste comes around and we’re reminded to think about how much we throw away. And while the message is important, I think it’s also worth being honest about something, especially here in the United Arab Emirates.

Living a completely zero waste lifestyle here is really hard.

So much of daily life in the UAE is built around convenience. Food delivery, pre-packaged groceries, single-use plastics, they’re everywhere. Even when you’re trying to make better choices, it’s not always easy to avoid waste.

And that can feel frustrating.

Because you care, you want to do better, but the system doesn’t always make it simple.

The idea of zero waste can be inspiring, but it can also feel a bit all-or-nothing. And when something feels out of reach, it’s easy to think, what’s the point?

That’s the part we need to change.

Because sustainability was never meant to be about doing everything perfectly.

For most of us, it’s about small, realistic shifts:

  • Remembering a reusable bottle (sometimes!)
  • Saying no to extra plastic cutlery
  • Reusing what we already have
  • Repurposing the use of some items when possible
  • Giving rather than throwing, maybe some else needs this item
  • Just being a bit more aware of what we’re consuming

Not perfect. Not zero. But better.

And that counts.

The UAE is moving in the right direction, there’s more awareness, more conversations, and more focus on sustainability than ever before.

But big change takes time.

In the meantime, it’s the everyday choices, made by lots of people, that start to shift things.

A different way to think about it

This International Day of Zero Waste, maybe the goal isn’t zero.

Maybe it’s just less.

Less waste. Less pressure. Less guilt.

More awareness, more intention, and more people feeling like they can be part of the change.

Because that’s what really makes a difference.
